Barnsley's foundations are built on the coal industry and for more than 100 years coal was king. The decline in the industry has meant the town had to re-invent itself and although it does remember the coal heritage with monuments the town has tried hard to move on.
Five miles west of Barnsley itself is Cannon Hall, an 18th century country mansion which houses the town's collection of glass, ceramics and furniture.
Also check out Yorkshire Sculpture Park, noth of Barnsley, which has a changing prgramme of exhibits and a newly opened visitor centre, all in 500 acres of parkland. |
