Mallaig
View across the harbour

At the end of the Road to the Isles, and the West Highland Railway line is the coastal town of Mallaig.

Whilst Mallaig is at the end of A830, your journey doesn't need to end there.  Travellers can enjoy short trips to the Isles of the Inner Hebrides, Rum and Eigg, plus there is a large car ferry to Skye.
The car ferry to Skye takes around 25 minutes, whilst the smaller isles of Rum and Eigg are easily reached in just over an hour.

Variety of shops in Malliag

If you are taking the Road to the Isles from Fort William specifically to use the ferry, then it is worth checking that the ferry is running - luckily this is easily done, beacuse as your turn off the A82 onto the A830 there is a large electronic information board can be seen with upto date information on the next ferry times.

As you might expect from a coastal town, nearly all the bars, restaurants and chip shops serve locally caught fish – a must for all foodies!!

If you’ve packed sandwiches (or bought cod and chips), there is a bench area in the town near the harbour where you can sit and eat.
Look out for the golden retriever – at first you are led to believe that he belongs to one of your fellow picknickers, however it soon becomes apparent that this dog doesn’t belong to any of them.  Infact he belongs to a local pub landlord, and comes down to try to scrounge a few tasty morsels from visitors.  The dog is a good omen as the seaguls won't come near whilst he is there!

Across the road from the bench area is a wonderful café, the Harbour View Cafe.  The cafe has a wide range of coffees and the Millionaires shortbread is a must.

The town is also home to a large Marine Centre, unfortunately however is was closed for our visit.

Mallaig still has a local fishing fleet

But for the real story of Mallaig, why not visit the Mallaig Heritage Centre next to the station. The centre houses an exhibition which provides information on the history of Mallaig and the surrounding area, including fishing, crofting and the railway.
