Situated on the beautiful ‘Road to the Isles’ is Glenfinnan.

A large Glenfinnan Monument and visitor centre mark the site where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised the Jacobite standard with some 1,200 highlanders.  The mounment was built in memory of all the clansmen who fought for the cause.

Glenfinnan is alongside Loch Shiel. The surrounding area and the Loch itself are home to Golden Eagles. One of the best ways of seeing them is to use the services of Loch Shiel Cruises who run eagle spotting trips from Glenfinnan.

On the other side of the road to the monument are the arches of the Glenfinnan railway viaduct designed by Robert McAlpine. During the summer months the Jacobite steam train runs from Fort William to Mallaig and over the Glenfinnan viaduct. Indeed, the world famous Hogwarts express from the Harry Potter movies passes over the viaduct when it travels between platform 9 ¾ and Hogwarts school for wizards.

A museum for the West Highland Railway Lines is located in a restored station at Glenfinnan, after the exhibition visitors can take refreshments or arrange overnight accommodation in the Glenfinnan dining and sleeping carriages.
