Doncaster has roots in industries like train building and coal mining and thrived during the Industrial Revolution.

The Flying Scotsman steam train was created here but now it's a much quieter place. Check out the town's museum and also Mansion House in the High Street - built in 1748. 
These days it's known for the racecourse which hosts the St. Leger, the oldest classic horserace in the world.
 
Worth seeing is nearby Conisborough Castle, which was built in 1190 for Hamelin Plantagenet, the illegitimate half-brother of Henry II and it was featured in Sir Walter Scott's novel Ivanhoe.
