The Zennor Mermaid
In the tale of the Zennor Mermaid, a local choirestier, Matthew Trewhella, sang so brilliantly that a mermaid living in the nearby Pendor Cove was captivated by his voice. The mermaid put on a long dress to hide her tail and made her way to the church to hear better. Each day she would slip away before the end back to the sea.
One day she stayed too long and was seen by the Matthew; she was very beautiful and they fell in love immediately. The mermaid could stay on shore only for short periods, and she had to tell Matthew that she was from the sea. He insisted that he return with her to the sea. He carried her back to the cove and followed back into the water never to be seen again.
The legend is completed by the claim that if you go to Pendour Cove at sunset in the summer you may be able to hear Matthew singing still. An ornately carved bench in the Zennor’s St. Senara church shows the mermaid. |
