Wells

Wells is said to be the smallest city in England and it's dominated by a beautifully ornate cathedral right in the centre.
There are reckoned to be 400 carved figures on the front of the cathedral alone.

Just a short walk from the cathedral is picturesque Vicar's Close, said to be the oldest planned street in Europe. It was planned by Bishop Ralph of Shrewsbury who was fed up with members of the Vicar's Choral, whose behaviour was often scandalous. He hoped by housing them in the one place that temptation could be kept at arm's length.

Worth seeing is the strange custom at Bishop's Palace next door to Vicar's Close. Here, when the swans are hungry they pull on a bell and food is brought out to them!
