Bath is an outstanding mix of Roman baths and Georgian grandeur - visitors won't be surprised to learn it is classed as a World Heritage Site because of the architecture.
The most obvious place to start are the preserved Roman Baths, right in the centre of the city. Built around 2,000 years ago, it still has a natural hot spring and a major project to restore the Thermase Bath Spa has recently been completed.
However impressive the baths are don't think that's it as far as the city is concerned. Get walking, exploring some of the many art galleries and antique shops which are tucked away up side streets.
For an example of Georgian architecture at its' very best head to Royal Crescent, where 30 houses are set on a hillside with a maginifcent sweeping lawn which is separated from the park below by a ha-ha - an invisible wall.
Tour buses have been banned from driving along the street so the easiest way to see it is to walk. For an idea of what the houses look like visit Number 1 Royal Crescent which has been re-done as it would have appeared in the late 18th century. Another must are the wonderful little shops on both sides of Pulteney Bridge. Here you'll find everything from clothes shops to cafes, all with views of the River Avon. |
