East Ayrshire is more of a farming area, made up of several small towns and villages.
Agriculture, textile manufacture and engineering have all been prominent here.
The main town is Kilmarnock which is thought to take its name from the missionary St Marnock and indeed, the area has many archaelogical sites showing that the expansion of the area dates back to the expansion of Christianity in 397.
In the town centre can still be seen the cross marking the middle of the town and the Burns' connection is strong with a statue commemmorating the printing of the first edition of Robert Burns' poems in the town.
