Salford has tried hard to shake off the image portrayed in paintings by celebrated artists L.S. Lowry - that of a a gritty industrial centre.
For many years Salford was the 'smoky old town,' relying on industries like cotton and steel for survival.
These days tourists are now heading for the area mainly to see the new Lowry Centre, which is much more than an art gallery in honour of the artist.
Here, you'll find restaurants, cafes, shops, cinemas, galleries and theatres, all in a spruced up waterside setting at Salford Quay, right on the Manchester Ship Canal.
