    • York
    The walled city of York is a history lesson on the rest of Britain.  Invaded by the Romans in 71AD, it became one of their prestige cities, with buildings, baths, ampitheatres and beautiful mosaic floors, many of which can still be seen in the city museum today.
    After the Romans, came the Saxons and after them the Vikings. York recreates the sights, sounds and SMELLS of the time with an interactive trip round the Jorvick Viking Centre.
    Near the city the English kings battled it out for supremacy, with William the Conqueror eventually being crowned king in 1066. 
    The city comprehensively covers all these significant moments in history with several museums. 
    Hardly surprising, then, that George VI once said: "The history of York is the history of England."
    Away from the history, York is a charming city of cobbled streets with good shopping and  hundreds of restaurants and cafes. The perfect place for a weekend break or a base during a tour of the Yorkshire countryside.
