| | | The area of Hambleton is often dubbed Herriot Country because of its' associations with James Herriot, author of the hugely successful 'All Creatures Great and Small' television series. |
| The books and the series really put Yorkshire on the map in the 1980s and many tourists flock to Thirsk, the town where the series was filmed. Fans will enjoy The World of James Herriot Visitor Centre in the town. |
| The town is near Northallerton, the main county town of North Yorkshire, where you'll find plenty of shops, boutiques and markets. |
| Follow in the trail of a rather older English character at the village of Great Ayton. This picturesque place, nestling beside the River Leven, is the start of the Captain Cook Heritage Trail in North Yorkshire. He was educated at the village school. |
| From the market town of Easingwold, head for one of the area's strangest attractions - the Kilburn White Horse. |
This huge horse, carved out of the ground, is not some mysterious ancient symbol. It was actually designed in 1857 and paid for by Thomas Taylor, a native of nearby Kilburn. |
Measuring 314 feet long by 228 feet high, it was originally whitewashed to keep the colour white (as the limestone it was cut into is the wrong colour!) but these days chalk chippings are used. |
