Cirencester is a lively market town that is has been the home to the Royal Agricultural College since it was founded in 1846. The town was also the second largest settlement in Roman Britain, largely due to its location at the convergence of several important Roman roads. Today this history is reflected in the collection of Roman-British artifacts in the Corinium Museum.
The focal point of the town is the Parish Church of St. John Baptist that serves as a reminder to the medieval wealth of the town. It is the grandest of the Cotswold wool churches. The preserved houses of former wool merchants and their employees, dated from the 17th Century, can be seen in the town.
