Sherwood Forest is the legendary home of Robin Hood - who robbed from the rich to give to the poor and supposedly poached the King's deer in the royal forest.
But it's also an area of natural beauty with an outstanding collection of ancient oak trees. More than 900 trees in the park are over 600 years old and not surprisingly it's home to a bewildering array of wildlife, including beetles, spiders, Long Eared Owls and Redstarts.
The visitor centre is the best place to find out the history of the forest, from the days of Robin Hood to the activities on offer in the 21st century.
One place to check out is the Major Oak - reputed to be the hiding place of Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men. Thought to be up to 1,000 years old, it weighs 23 tons and has to be held up to stop it from collapsing.
