One of the strangest tourist attractions is not actually in Gateshead town but the the area claims as its' own.
The Angel of the North is Britain's largest sculpture and not difficult to spot - 90,000 drivers pass it on the A1 every day.
The site chosen for this amazing piece of art by Antony Gormley is significant - a former colliery pit head baths. The Angel is meant as a tribute to all those who toiled underneath the ground. Made from weathering steel which turns it a red brown colour over time , it has a wing span almost the same length as a jumbo jet and is the height of a five storey building.
If this amazing structure whets the appetite then follow the Marking the Ways Sculpture Trail in the Great North Forest or visit Riverside Sculpture Park for some amazing artistic interpretations of Gateshead history and heritage.
