Chatsworth house is often referred to as the 'Palace of the Peak'. The present house dates from
1686 to 1707 and is mainly the work of the 4th Earl who, in 1694, became the 1st Duke of Devonshire.
The house stands in a 1,000 acre park and has around 100 acres of gardens that were laid out in the 1840s.
One of the highlights of these gardens are the major water features, The Emperor Fountain is a single 290
feet high spout, which is the tallest in Britain, and the other is an ornamental cascade, down which water
has continually flowed since 1696. In addition there is a children's adventure playground and farmyard.
