| There are beautiful towns and villages nestling in the hills just waiting to be discovered. You can sample the mineral water in the elegant spa town of Buxton, or perhaps the gingerbread from Ashbourne, or maybe the famous Bakewell Pudding. Meanwhile Chesterfield, famous for its 'Crooked Spire' is also home to perhaps the largest flea market in the country. There are also great houses are scattered through the countryside such as Hardwick Hall, Haddon Hall, Chatsworth House, Bolsover Castle and Kedleston Hall. |
| In 2001 Derbyshire's Peak District celebrated its 50th anniversary as a National Park. The park offers 894 square kilometres of countryside to explore and offers a huge variety of activities such as hiking, climbing, cycling, caving and hang-gliding. To top it all the Peak district is home to England's highest plateau, Kinder Scout, that stands at 626.4 metres. For the more adventurous walkers the park also marks the beginning of the 250 miles Pennine Way that runs to the Scottish Borders. |
Well Dressing
Well Dressing is an ancient ceremony peculiar to Derbyshire, the origins of which are not clear. Some belive that it is a pagan ritual giving thanks to fresh supplies of water, whilst others suggest that it is linked to various outbreaks of plague!! |
| Well's are dressed with a mosaic of flora and fauna, such as petal, leaves and berries which are pressed into clay. The clay is held within a wooden frame which is then mounted on the Well. |
The 'dressing' programme runs throughout Derbyshire and it's fringe areas from the beginning of May until the middle of September each year. Some Wells are dressed one year and then not the next year, and the best resource of dates we have found to be http://sinfin.net/welldressing/dates.html |
