| | | Hadrian's Wall is perhaps the most striking legacy the Romans left Britain. |
It can be accessed from Carlisle but the best place to see and learn about this barrier is one mile east of Housesteads Foret. as the remains are most prominent.
Now a World Heritage Site, it ranks alongside some of the best known wonders of the modern world in importance, if not beauty.
The wall stretches from the Solway Firth in the west, right across and through Northumberland National Park to the aptly named Wallsend in the east.
Contrary to popular belief the wall was not built to keep out the Scots. It was constructed on the orders of Roman Emperor Hadrian in AD122 to mark the northern boundary of his empire as well as to keep out the Barbarians - the Scots and Picts were not around at that time!
Like many of the constructions from Roman times it was an incredible feat of engineering with points all along from where soldiers could watch who what was crossing the border.
All along the wall are various museums telling the incredible story of Hadrian's Wall. There is also a Hadrian's Wall bus which travels along the route.
Well worth exploring along the Hadrian's Wall route is Corbridge - the remains of a Roman town, the Museum of Antiquities at Newcastle and Segedunum Roman Fort at Wallsend.
