Holy Island
Holy Island is also known by the Anglo-Saxon name Lindisfarne.
Just off the coast by Berwick-upon-Tweed, visitors have to time their visit to coincide with the tide as a paved causeway is the only way to get across. Just 150 people live here but to half a million people a year visit to enjoy the feeling of splendid isolation which the island enjoys.
Visit the remains of Lindisfarne Castle, the island's priory and the pretty harbour.

Or learn about the island's religious origins - a monastery was founded here by St. Aidan in 635. St. Cuthbert became bishop in 684 and a series of beautifully decorated gospels were produced at the end of the 7th century.

Such rich history naturally makes it a place of Christian pilgrimage and retreat - there are many organised events on the island throughout the year.

But it's also another kind of retreat- for birdwatchers who come to observe the sea  birds who make their homes in the limestone cliffs at the north of the island. The area is also part of Lindisfarne Nature Reserve which protects birds, plants and animals.
Don't worry if you miss the tide and are stranded overnight. The island has places to stay, although it does get very busy in the summer.
