This area often remains forgotten by tourists that flock to the nearby Lake District, but the coastline here is also worth a visit.  There are attractive seaside resorts such as Grange-over-Sands, historic market towns such as Ulverston, and the dramatic ruins of Furness Abbey.

Ulverston is an attractive market town of jumbled cobbled streets and limestone cottages.  You can learn about the history of the former cotton, tanning and iron ore industries at Ulverston Heritage Centre.  Other attractions include the Lakes Glass Centre, where you can see glass blowing in progress and the Laurel and Hardy museum that celebrates the life of Ulverstons most famous previous resident Stan Laurel.
