Four miles north of Ambleside, Grasmere is a charming grey-stone village set beside one of the regions smaller lakes. Its most famous resident was the poet William Wordsworth and tourist flock here in the summer to visit his grave in St Oswalds Churchyard. Nearby is the School where Wordsworth used to teach – it’s now a gingerbread shop. South of Grasmere is Dove Cottage that was home to Wordsworth and his wife until 1808, and where much of his poetry was written.
