Guildford is the county town of Surrey and although close to London, still maintains its own character.
It's a busy town but there's an attractive riverside area along the River Wey, where you can visit the National Trust museum at Dapdune Wharf or enjoy a trip down the river.
Guildford Cathedral is worth a look as is the museum, where there's information on Alice in Wonderland author Lewis Carroll, who spent much of his time in Guildford.
Just a few miles from the town is the Royal Horticultural Society garden at Wisely - a treat for gardening fans.
