Newport is the capital of the Isle of Wight. The main attraction here other than the usual main shopping areas is the hilltop fortress of Carisbrooke Castle. Historically and architecturally the castle is diverse, having been extended many times throughout its life, and having had several notable visitors. Today a huge attraction are the donkeys that demonstrate to visitors how the sixteenth century well-house worked by turning a huge treadmill to draw up the water.
