Buckinghamshire's name came from the amount of beech trees in the area and today the area is still known for its fine furniture.
The area is another close enough to London to be within commuting distance but probably the best known part of the county is Milton Keynes - built as a new town to handle the overspill from London.
The plan for a new 20th century town has been much criticised but Milton Keynes is an interesting example of what happens when the architects take over - pay a visit just to see the Concrete Cows - a giant sculpture for which the area has become famous.
The county is also home to more traditional market towns like Amersham and Aylesbury.
The area was also home to one of the most amazing Second World War stories- the codebreakers who worked at Bletchley Park and cracked the notoriously difficult Enigma code.
Find out all about how it was done by visiting Bltehcley Park, not far from Milton Keynes.
