The New Forest was a medieval deer hunting forest created by William the Conqueror in 1079 and hasn't changed too much over the centuries.
Traditions which existed then still remain today and the beauty of the landscape is that it has remained relatively unscarred by modern day life.
A place to relax and unwind, the New Forest Museum and Visitor Centre gives a comprehensive history as well as advice on where to walk and what to see.
A special feature of the New Forest are the ponies, cattle and pigs that wander around. The advice to keep a safe distance from both!
