Once the capital of England, WInchester boasts plenty of treasures, including the reputed Round Table of King Arthur legend.
The Great Hall is all that survives of Winchester Castle and this is where you find the round table,
Winchester Cathedral dates back to 1079 and is pretty impressive, with the long medieval Nave in the world and the ornate WInchester Bible, which was produced in the 12th century.
Countless famous people have had an influence on the town, including author Jane Austen, Florence Nightingale and Sir Walter Raleigh. It's also the place where the legend of St. Swithun was born.
A Bishop of Winchester, St. Swithun was buried outside the west door of the Old Minster in 917AD. However, his grave was opened during an expansion of the Old Minster and it rained for 40 days, giving rise to the legend that if it rains on St Swithun's day it will pour for another 40 days.
