Southampton
The port of Southampton is getting a bit of re-vamp for the 21st century in a bid to compete with the more obvious tourist attractions of Hampshire's best known naval city, Southampton.
Yet, Southampton has its' own tales to tell. Most notably it was the port from which the ill-fated Titanic set sail on 10th April 1912. The supposedly 'unsinkable' ship hit an iceberg four days later, killing more than 1,500 of the 2,200 passengers.
Southampton Maritime Museum not only tells the fascinating story of the Titanic but of Southampton as a port.
Lottery money is helping improve the city parks and sports facilities and the city has a strong maritime theme.
Home port of the world's most famous cruise liner, the QE2, nearby Ocean Village is one of the UK's biggest marina developments. The annual Southampton International Boatshow is the largest of its kind in Europe.
