Cheddar Gorge
Cheddar Gorge is a series of spectacular underground caves found down the twisting roads in steep limestone cliffs.
A variety of ticket options allows visitors to see just a couple or all of the caves and it's worth exploring at least a couple - although make sure you have sturdy shoes as the ground can be slippery.
Inevitably, there a lot of gifts shops and tea rooms en-route but that doesn't detract from the beauty of Gough Cave, which was home to Stone Age people and wasn't discovered until the end of the 19th century. This is also where Cheddar Man - a 9,000 year-old skeleton - was discovered.
For the fit, walk up the 274 steps of Jacob's Ladder, for some breathtaking views of the surrounding Mendip Hills.
There's also the opportunity to try climbing, abseiling or caving, with organised trips every day.
