The Isle of Portland is actually connected to the mainland by a thin causeway, but this area has a unique character and offers vistors some amazing views of the rest of the Dorest coast and Chesil Beach. This area was once famous for its limestone quarries and many of these are now key wildlife sites and make it popular with bird watchers. The high point of the island is Portland Bill which has been the site of a lighthouse since the 18th century. The area is particularly popular with divers and rock climbers.
