Ross-on-Wye
An  ideal base for a trip to the Malvern Hills is Ross-on-Wye, a beautiful market town overlooking the River Wye.
If the black and white timber Tudor buildings are your thing then they are plentiful here. Known as one of the Many surround the Market Hall where you can still get some bargains at the twice weekly markets held here.
The imposing sandstone Market House is now a heritage museum.
Where the River Wye bends is an old oak tree said to have been just a sapling at the time of Henry VIII and in the church yard is a Plague Cross which was erected in memory of those who died during the bubonic plague seven centuries ago.
Nearby is Symonds Yat, another beautiful place to stop and enjoy the views.
At Symonds Yat Point where there are great views of the River Wye snaking through the lush countryside below is an unexpected treat. The area is home to peregrine falcons and during the summer the RSPB provide telescopes so visitors can see them without disturbing the birds.
