Huntingdon
The Cromwell influence is all over Huntingdon, for this is the town in Cambridgeshire where he was born.
The grammar school which he went to, as did diarist Samuel Pepys, is now the Cromwell Museum.
And if that's not enough history on this character, head for nearby Hinchingbrooke House, which although now a school does open its' doors to the public during the summer.
Huntingdon dates back to Saxon times and is a pleasant market town. There are a couple of natural sites worth exploring nearby - bluebell covered Brampton Wood and Graftham Water Nature Reserve, where there's a sailing centre and lots of birdlife.
