Not your usual Indian restaurant, Zest is smart and modern with a terrific menu combining classic and inventive dishes. The decor in this bright, airy, centre-of-town shopfront is clean and open, with white walls, blond chairs, contemporary styling. The menu includes dishes like starter of Zest's own tandoori trout, main course of medium-spicy Jaipuri chicken with fried mushrooms, onions and capsicums with Punjabi masala in thick sauce. Peshwari naan and bhajis are excellent. The service is hip and friendly and the wine list well matched to the flavours. And yes, there is chicken tikka masala, if you must, but this is a great place for exploring new flavours.

Zest would be a terrific choice for a smart, informal gathering of friends for any kind of celebration. The single dining room can accommodate up to 42 with other diners present, or the whole venue can be had to seat up to 50. The decor is cool and modern and not at all formal, and the service is like that, too. Dishes include old favourites like kormas, do piazas and vindaloos, but also exciting new treats like Zest's own starter, salmon tikka, main course of Calcutta Prawn Palak with fresh spinach, garlic and coriander. The list of vegetarian specialities will please diners of that persuasion very much.
