There's always a twinge of sadness when older London landmarks go under a facelift -- beautiful original features disappear, replaced with uniform mass-produced modern materials. However, Wandsworth's Queen Adelaide has got the refurb balance just right. Built in 1786, this gastropub has been brought back to life with enhanced period features creating a lighter, brighter traditional venue with well-thought modern twists. The garden has been carefully landscaped with covered, heated decking so it can be enjoyed in even the most miserable of British winters. Lunch and dinner offer sharing boards to start or for a light nibble, highlighting freshly sourced ingredients such as cheese with Quickes extra-mature cheddar, St. Endellion brie and Devon blue or seafood with crayfish, marinated salmon, smoked halibut and smoked tuna. Modern British and European mains mix old and new favourites and is far from your usual pub grub -- try braised Gloucester old spot belly of pork with cabbage and bacon, selection of mushrooms and Madeira sauce or a pan-fried tuna steak with mussels, prawns, chorizo, garlic, chilli, tomatoes and white wine. Beer lovers are spoilt for choice with an extensive list of unusual guest brews and Young's favourites, while the wine list boasts over 40 wines available by both the glass and bottle.
