The Punch Bowl Inn and Restaurant in the tiny hamlet of Crosthwaite, Cumbria, next to St Mary's Church, is the perfect confection of comfort and style, sophistication and simplicity. The oak-floored dining room with its smart leather seating and stunning fireplace is the setting for some impressive meals. Chef Jonathan Watson produces an inventive, assured menu of modern British cuisine with a special emphasis on local produce, particularly local Cumbrian beef and lamb. The wines and service are exactly what you'd want, and you can extend your pleasure by decamping to the friendly bar for coffee, drinks, a quiet stint by the fireplace, or by staying overnight. The Punch Bowl's views are out of this world.
The Punch Bowl Inn and Restaurant in Cumbria is of a size so intimate - seating just 32 - that a private dining room is out of the questions. But we'd be extremely tempted to hire the whole venue for wedding receptions, birthdays, anniversaries or take over the inn as well for a walking-and-food blowout weekend.
