Ponsbourne Park hotel and restaurant is an elegant 17th century house set in beautiful countryside a few miles from Hertford. This 2 AA award-winning restaurant features calm colours, a marble fireplace, a grand piano and lovely views out over the grounds. You can choose three courses (and the wide-ranging menu is generous with its choices) for an astonishingly reasonable price that includes coffee and petit fours. The menu is based on seasonal ingredients, but you might start with Chinese pork belly terrine with grilled figs and a sweet chilli glaze, while mains could be baked fillet of monkfish, garnish bourguignon and a jus lie de vin with spinach mousse. Imaginative puddings include rice pudding doughnuts with berry jus, and pear and pecan nut roulade with butterscotch sauce.
