Formerly the vicarage, The Pear Tree at Purton is an elegant Cotswold stone hotel in seven acres of grounds on the outskirts of the Saxon village of Purton, just five miles from Swindon.
Head Chef Alan Postill has been there for ten years and his food has pulled in many awards, including two rosettes from the AA. His bright, beautifully-decorated conservatory restaurant looks out over the hotel's pretty gardens and serves modern English cooking based on the freshest of fresh ingredients and matched with a dynamic wine list. Start off with ratatouille soup which comes with a parmesan straw, then try Wiltshire pork tenderloin with caramelised apple and creamy sage sauce or pan-fried monfish with sesame seeds and Chinese-style cabbage. Desserts are a fabulous dilemma: try making your mind up between hazelnut tart with fudge ice-cream, and rhubarb and vanilla brûlée. It's not easy.
