Directly off the main road along the Brighton seafront, Preston Street is dominated by restaurants. When in the mood for a traditional Indian, locals step into the smart yet informal Viceroy of India where traditional red carpets, dark velvet banquette seating and hand-printed scenes of ancient Calcutta life are matched with modern white linen-dressed tables and dark wood chairs. An extensive menu lists several korai, tandoori balti and masala specialties. On week days there's a calm atmosphere when the contented murmur rarely rises above the ethnic background music. Nights bring bit more of a buzz. Diners are a mixture of couples, families and business people. Sit at a window table, if possible.

Information for Groups

A genuine variety of events are held at the Viceroy, from birthdays and anniversaries to conferences (no stag parties, mind you). It holds up to 66 for a sit-down meal, and around 80 for a reception. Smaller parties of 26 or less (or 35 standing) may prefer a private section to the right, separated from the dining room by a half wall. Group menu choices are simply a la carte and set. Big wine and drinks list. The gently lively Medusa bar three doors away is recommended for drinks before or after your meal. Children are welcome. Open from noon every day. Fridays and Saturdays are the busiest nights.
