The Gun restaurant and pub in unspoilt countryside near Heathfield, East Sussex, is cosy and smart and full of funky antiques and good humour. This 15th century pub was voted Restaurant of the Year by locals last year - we only wish we lived closer. You can settle into various hideaway corners to dine: the small beamed dining room, the paneled fireplace room, the sunny terrace overlooking the extensive gardens. The Gun's owners are scrupulous about sourcing fresh, local ingredients of the highest quality, like the traditionally reared Kentish Limousin steaks with gratin dauphinois, tomato and French beans served with one of three sauces. Excellent beers and wines and lovely service.
The Gun restaurant keeps the prettiest room in the house for private parties - a wood-panelled space with mad gold-leaf fireplace. Accommodating up to 30, this tasteful space would be superb for business celebrations, birthdays and anniversaries, and family gatherings. Wee ones can run riot in the huge garden. Fantastic spot.
