Having gained a Michelin star at L'Ortolan near Reading, Alan Murchison has set up a second fine dining camp in medieval Ludlow, the foodie capital of rural Britain. La Bécasse already has regulars from among the country's discerning tribe of gastronomes, returning for Murchison's spectacular Modern French gourmand £55 tasting menu - capable, we hear, of inducing a state of bliss. At £25 for 2 courses, the menu du jour is a marvellous budget option. It's a beautiful space too; a 17th-century coaching inn divided into 4 dining rooms, and a hidden courtyard for delightfully relaxed pre-meal drinks and conversation. A hit.
The local art-filled Gallery is La Bécasse's main private function space for groups of 10 or less. Parties of 8 maximum can dine a la carte. If you're more, you'll dine from a set menu. A comprehensive wine has something for everyone, from a £22 house to £300 fine wines and vintage Bordeauxs. Note the natural, sulphate-free wines - a new trend.
