A cobbled street called Ashton Lane, just off bustling Glasgow's Byres Road, is home to a delightfully bijou Indian restaurant called Ashoka. The intoxicating aroma of all things spicy is a bit of (an enticing) giveaway. Its proximity to Glasgow University campus makes it popular with students, though don't go expecting a shabby restaurant. There's a rather magnificent Indian market scene mural along the back wall to ogle. And most tables are arranged in booths, creating a discernibly cosy atmosphere. At £6.96 for a two-course business lunch, or £4.95 for a thali meal, Ashoka Ashton Lane offers fab value curries. They're filling too, so you usually end up spending less than you might expect.
Pre-theatre menu £11.95 served daily from 5 to 6:30pm. Decent vegetarian choice. Handful of European dishes for curry non-fans. Affordable, international wine list, plus usual Indian and international beers and spirits.
