Merthyr Tydfil has a romantic history and partly got its name because of Tydfil, a Welsh princess who was taken prisoner and killed in 480AD for her Christian beliefs.
She became St Tydfil the Martyr and so the town got its name.
In recent history the area was known for producing iron. Indeed, at one point Merthyr Tydfil was the largest iron producer in the world and had a population bigger than Cardiff and Swansea together.
These days it's a much quieter place. Walkers and cyclists can follow the nearby Taff Trail or enjoy the woodland of the Fechan Nature Reserve or Gethin Woodland Park.
Or save the legs from becoming weary and take the steam train on the Brecon Mountain Railway from Pant for a spectacular view of the Taf Fechan Reservoir to Dol-y-Gaer.
