North Ayrshire includes many pretty seaside villages which are still popular today as day-trip destinations for Glaswegians wanting a change of scenery.
Towns like Largs, Ardossan and Saltcoats can all be seen during a pleasant drive around the Firth of Clyde coastline and a walk along the seafront at Largs while enjoying an icecream on the sea front shouldn't be missed.
This area also includes a couple of jewels which are worth making some time for.
The small island of Millport (also called Great Cumbrae) is just a 10 minutes ferry ride from Largs.
Or head to Ardrossan and take the ferry to Arran- known affectionately as Scotland in Miniature.
The title is well deserved - hills, castles, mountains, wildlife (including more than 100 species of birds) and history - all crammed into an island just 165 square miles.
