Anyone who has ventured to Skye even for a day will tell you it's well worth a visit.
Approached by ferry from Glenelg or Mallaig or by the relatively new (and expensive) Skye Bridge, you need dry weather and an inquisitive nature to truly appreciate this island - often known as the Misty Isle.
It's a place with a romantic history. Here, Bonnie Prince Charlie was taken, disguised as Flora Macdonald's maid, to hide after the ill-fated Battle of Culloden in 1745.
Skye is now inhabited by 14,000 people and is renowned for natural beauty, proud Gaelic heritage and wildlife ranging from the graceful Golden Eagle to the shy otter.
The range of hills which dominate the Misty Isle are called the Cuillin Hills and don't miss out on stunning sunsets which have been a favourite subject for photographers.
The capital is the port of Portree, but head north of the island for the best scenery and less crowds.
The island is also home to some award winning restaurants to try and hotels and guest houses which bring a whole new meaning to the phrase ' room with a view '. |
