West Lothian is actually made up of more than 40 different communities, ranging from ancient towns like Linlithgow - which was given a royal charter in 1389 to Livingston, one of several called 'new towns' created in the 1960s to deal with the overspill from crowded cities. |
Industries of the past included mining but these days the area has been nicknamed 'Silicon Glen' - because of the increasing amount of hi-tech industries which have settled in the area, including micro electronics, biotechnology and computer software. |
It's an area which has proved increasingly popular, especially for commuters who can't afford to live as well as work in the Capital. |
