Winning the UK City of Architecture and Design in 1999 and prior to that European City of Culture in 1990, Glasgow is one of the cutural destinations of Europe.
The Burrell Collection, The Art Gallery and Museum and The Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery are some of the greatest art collections in the UK. In the Hunterian you'll find a large collection of work by Rennie Mackintosh including a replica of one of the artist's great home.
If you are interested in the industrial history of the area then a visit to the Summerlee Heritage Trust is well worth it. The Tenement House can give you an insight into the life or ordinary Glaswegians during the industrial periods of the cities life.
Glasgow is also THE place for shoppers, with the specialist boutiques of Princes Square to designer shops in nearby Buchanan Street.
For a complete change of scene take a trip on the city's underground system - known locally as The Clockwork Orange - and explore the West End of Glasgow. Just off Byres Road you'll find a bewildering array of unusual and unique shops and excellent restaurants.
Not for nothing is Glasgow known as The Dear Green Place - it has more than 70 parks. One of the best is the Botanical Gardens at the top of Byres Road. On a sunny people watch in the peaceful surroundings - an oasis of calm in a busy city.
