Not so many years ago, Argyll and Bute was traditionally the area where Scots from cities like Glasgow would go to get away from it all.
Going 'Doon The watter' (literally 'down the water' of the Clyde) like those holidaymakers of 50 years ago is still a great way to get a flavour of the many small islands which make up this part of Scotland.
It's an odd mixture of distinctive islands like Rothesay and (still a popular day trip destination) Millport and stretches of water like Loch Lomond.
The beauty of this area is that it's fairly accessible by car and boat from Glasgow and on a beautiful summer's day there's no better way to explore the nooks and crannies than a trip by ferry which gives a glimpse of what the area has to offer.
Argyll covers the Kintyre peninsula - the long finger of land which stretches from Inverary down to the very tip of the Mull of Kintyre.
Take your camera for some stunning views - the hills (or Paps) of Jura and the brightly painted houses on the Isle of Mull.
Don't forget Iona - the island was where missionaries landed in AD 563 but long before then it was the place where Clan chiefs and ancient rulers were laid to rest. Today it is also the resting place of one of Scotland's modern day leaders - the former Labour Party leader John Smith. His family were who given special permission to be buried here after his sudden death in 1994.
