Angus
Like its' neighbour Fife, Angus was a stronghold for the ancient Scottish Picts or 'painted ones'. In fact you can still see their hill forts at Finavon. The Picts did not have an easy time here, being invaded and then occupied by Roman armies, and later on by Vikings. Eventually the area was settled by the Dutch.
Angus shared its ancient passions with its neighbour Fife and this continues today in the form of golf. Angus is the home of the Carnoustie golf course. One of the great Links courses, Carnoustie, hosted the 1999 Open Championship.
The main town in Angus is Dundee, which has a great maritime history. Situated on the tidal estuary of the river Tay, there has been a harbour at Dundee since the 11th century. Famous for fishing and boat building you can find Captain Scott's boat Discovery which took him to the Antarctic moored at Discovery Point.
Angus is also the home to Glamis Castle which was the childhood home of the late HM The Queen Mother.
