Shannon (oftern refered to as Shannon Town) is the only new town in the Republic of Ireland and hence suffers or benefits, depending on your point of view, from a grid like road structure and ridged zoning. It was built on reclaimed marshland after World War II and given town status in 1982.
Shannon Airport is the main transatlantic link in Ireland. This leading power stems from the old Flying Boat terminal that was on the Shannon Esturary. When in 1936 it was realised that Flying Boats would soon be superceeded by airliners. The airport was completed in 1942 and by 1945 the first Transatlantic flights to and from New York were taking place.
