Street has a history going back to the Romans and a mentions in the Domesday Book, but it really got going in 1825 when Cyrus and James Clark opened their shoe factory and started the business that is now truely multinational. Clarks shoes still have their headquarters in Street today.
Clarks, like many other industrialists of their time, built terraces of model homes for their workers, and provided the village with it;s civic hall, library , open air swimming pool and theatre, which are all still going strong today. Now that shoe production has moved overseas the first shopping village in the country Clarks Village attracts three million visitors a year to Street.
Street is also the home of the world-famous Millfield School, which turns out a stream of the country's best sportsmen and women. |
