A place of pilgrimage for centuries, Glastonbury is probably as well known today for its' huge pop festival held just outside the town at Worthy Farm in Pilton.
People of all faiths have been drawn to Glastonbury. Christians believe it was where the earliest church was built. Others revere it as a mystical place where certain lay lines meet, providing a spiritual energy. It also has strong links with King Arthur.
Naturally, the amount of pilgrims here has given rise to a number of healing centres where people can relax body and mind. It's also a thriving market town with many sites worth visiting including the abbey remains and the Chalice Well - a spring under which it's claimed the Holy Grail is buried.
Don't miss the Glastonbury Tor - a hill which is regarded as a sacred site and affords superb views of Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire from the top. |
