Plymouth is the largest city in Devon. The large natural harbour has resulted in a colourful maritime history and this is now retold by exhibitions at the Plymouth Dome. It was from Plymouth that Captain Cook set off to circumnavigate the globe and Sir Francis Drake played bowls here before the Spanish Armada in 1588. Plymouth was also the departure point for the Pilgrim Fathers when they left to settle in North America.
Today the centre of Plymouth is quite modern due to extensive bombing during the second world war although older parts remain around the Barbican. Plymouth is also home to the interesting and educational National Marine Aquarium that provides visitors a glimpse into life under the sea.
